Last week all of the new international students at MTU arrived in Houghton. To get to know them, we worked with a group of American and international students to offer a variety of activities. We met a lot of people throughout the week and are excited to get to know them better in the coming year.
Here’s a glimpse of the week:
Blueberry Picking! From what we’ve been told berry picking is not common in many other countries. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much that there is talk of another blueberry picking trip this week!
Caleb is a big fan of any berry, but he particularly likes “blue awberries”, as he calls them. His favorite part of picking blueberries was having so many friends who gave him blueberries to eat!
A smaller group was invited to go hiking at Hungarian Falls. It was a big hit with everyone who went and it gave time to chat with students to start getting to know them better.
After the waterfall hike, a small group joined Caleb and I at our house for a pizza dinner.
One all-American activity is the bonfire, and it attracted a nice group of new students. Hans enjoyed chatting with a few guys from India, who have started getting to know our family since then.
Of course, no bonfire is complete without s’mores, so we made sure to include that at the bonfire!
Saturday held our big event – the International Welcome Picnic. About 250 students came and enjoyed food, sports, and new friendships with returning students and community volunteers. It was a great afternoon and we enjoyed spending more time with students we had met earlier in the week as well as the opportunity to meet more students! photo courtesy of Eric Hackney
This week is orientation for incoming first year students, as well as for the new international students. Join with us in praying for opportunities to meet and get to know students (both American and international) better before classes start. Also, pray that students will find fellowship and choose to follow God in these critical first weeks at college.
